Canada Gairdner International Awards

The Canada Gairdner International Awards recognize outstanding biomedical scientists whose “seminal discoveries and major scientific contributions constitute an original and significant achievement in biomedical science with impact on human health.” The award normally recognizes an original, seminal contribution or discovery rather than a lifetime work. Nominations in the field of translational research also are welcome. Gairdner invites the scientific community to nominate qualified scientists from any branch of biomedicine.

Each laureate receives $100,000 CDN that they can put towards anything they wish.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PROCESS OF NOMINATION(S) SUBMISSION HAS CHANGED: All nominations are submitted through the Gairdner Nominations Portal, accessible via An individual serving as the primary nominator will create a nominator profile on the site, which allows submission of a nomination.

The evaluation of the contributions of the Nominee(s) depends heavily on the quality of information supplied. Therefore, nominations should be accurate, detailed, updated, and with independent supporting letters from leading experts reflecting the Nominee’s accomplishments.

The recipients will be formally announced on March 22, 2018 and presented at the awards dinner on October 25, 2018 in Toronto.

All nominations will be maintained for a period of five (5) years and can be reconsidered with appropriate updates annually. If no prize is awarded after 5 years, the nomination is withdrawn and cannot be resubmitted for at least two (2) years. Under exceptional circumstances, an earlier re-nomination can be considered at the discretion of the President.

Deadline:  October 1, 2017
