NIH – Innovation Award: Minority Health and Health Equity (U01) Clinical Trials Optional

Purpose:

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to fund innovative research that will strengthen and advance minority health and health equity research.

Areas of interest include:

Proposals that focus on advancing equity in clinical trials by supporting efforts to advance diversity in clinical trials, equitable data efforts by increasing data available on diverse groups including, but not limited to, ethnicity, race, age, disability and geography, and equity of voices by increasing understanding of diverse patient perspectives, preferences, and unmet needs.

Background:

The FDA Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE) serves to promote and protect the health of diverse populations through research and communication of science that addresses health disparities. The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to support innovative research that will strengthen and advance minority health and health equity research.

Definition of Equity: “[T]he consistent and systematic fair, just, and impartial treatment of all individuals, including individuals who belong to underserved communities that have been denied such treatment, such as Black, Latino, Indigenous and Native American persons, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and other persons of color; members of religious minorities; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) persons; persons with disabilities; persons who live in rural areas; and persons otherwise adversely affected by persistent poverty or inequality.”[1]

Definition of Underserved Communities: “[The] populations sharing a particular characteristic, as well as geographic communities, that have been systematically denied a full opportunity to participate in aspects of economic, social, and civic life, as exemplified by the list in the preceding definition of ‘equity.’”[2]
