Diversity and Inclusion in Breast Cancer Research

The following research awards are designed with the primary goal of increasing diversity in the oncology workforce and breast cancer research. These awards are made possible through the support of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Self-identify as a member of a racial and/or ethnic group traditionally excluded in academic medicine according to the AAMC definition (Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders). For international applicants, it is recognized that underrepresentation can vary from setting to setting and individuals from racial or ethnic groups that are demonstrated to be traditionally excluded by their institution but not listed above are also eligible to apply for this program. Individual demographic information will be requested upon application.
  • Be a physician (MD, DO, or international equivalent).
  • Have a full-time faculty appointment (for the Professorship, ACRA and CDA), or enrolled in an oncology training or fellowship program (for the YIA) at an academic research institution.
  • Research focuses on breast cancer.

Young Investigator Awards (YIA) for Diversity and Inclusion in Breast Cancer Research Oncology Trainees, Fellows $50,000 for 1 year Full application due January 10, 2022

 

Career Development Award (CDA)

for Early Career Cancer Researchers – Due October 21, 2021 at 11:59pm ET

  • CDAs in ALL areas  ($200,000 over 3 years)
  • Walther Cancer Foundation CDA in Palliative and Supportive Care in Oncology ($200,000 over 3 years)

 

Applicants must meet the following criteria for the CDA:

  • Physician (MD, DO, or international equivalent) working in any country.
  • In the first to third year of a full-time primary faculty appointment in a clinical department at an academic research institution at the time of grant submission. Application must be submitted before the applicant has had three full years as faculty.
  • ASCO member or submit a membership application with the grant application.
  • Commit at least 50% of full- time effort in research (applies to total research, not just the proposed project) during the award period.

 

Young Investigator Awards (YIA)

for Early Career Cancer Researchers – Due January 10, 2022 at 11:59pm ET

  • Young Investigator Award for Invasive Lobular Carcinoma Research ($100,000 for up to 2 years)
  • Jose Baselga, MD, PhD, Young Investigator Award in Drug Development ($50,000 for the investigator and $10,000 for mentor for one year)
  • Endowed Young Investigator Award in Geriatric Oncology in Honor of Dr. Arti Hurria ($50,000 for one year)
  • Dr. Jose Leis Endowed Young Investigator Award in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia ($50,000 for one year)
  • Frist Family Endowed Young Investigator Award in Mantle Cell Lymphoma ($50,000 for one year)

 

Applicants must meet the following criteria for the YIA:

  • Physician (MD, DO, or international equivalent) working in any country.
  • Currently in the last two years of their final oncology subspecialty training at an academic research institution and within 10 years of obtaining medical degree at the time of grant submission.
  • ASCO member or submit a membership application with the grant application. ASCO offers free membership to physicians enrolled in an oncology training program.
  • Commit at least 60% of full- time effort in research (applies to total research, not just the proposed project) during the award period.
