NIH – Biotechnology Resource Grants

April 27, 2020 by dld5dt@virginia.edu

Purpose

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) has released a solicitation for

Biotechnology Resource Grants (P41). NIBIB intends for the NCBIBs to accelerate the development and

dissemination of new biomedical technology. This solicitation continues NIBIB’s long-standing P41

biotechnology resource grant program, but has been renamed to reflect this program’s status as a

signature NIBIB award.

Background

The central components of each Center are the Technology Research and Development (TR&D) projects.

Serving as the foundation of all activities within the Center, TR&D projects should be at the cutting edge

and working to develop new technology in response to the emerging needs of the biomedical research

community. Additionally, a Center should engage in Collaborative Projects (CPs) that serve as

technology drivers, users, and testbeds for the cutting-edge technology developed in TR&D projects and

Service Projects (SPs) that serve as users of the well-developed and stable technologies of the Center.

The TR&D, CPs, and SPs will all function synergistically to fully develop new technologies, their uses, and

provide training and dissemination with the goal exporting developments into the broader community

to achieve a wide impact on biomedical research. Centers will be expected to have the ability to apply

developed technologies to a broad range of basic, translational, and/or clinical research.

Award Information: While the solicitation does not specify the number of awards granted, proposal

budgets range between $600,000 and $750,000. In addition, up to $500,000 can be requested for

special-purpose equipment for the duration of a five-year project period. Support for the award may be

requested for up to five years. Applicants may submit a Renewal application. However, NCBIB Awards

will be restricted to a total of fifteen years.

Key Dates:

Full applications are due on May 25, September 25, and January 25 annually.
