2018 Thomas Jefferson Visiting Fellowship at Downing College, University of Cambridge

October 4, 2018 by School of Medicine Webmaster

This opportunity is available to faculty who have been awarded Sesquis or other research leave for 2019—2020.  Nominations are open for the Thomas Jefferson Visiting Fellowship at Downing College, Cambridge, for the Spring Semester of 2020 (January to June).

Eligible faculty are those working in fields taught at Cambridge, which include everything taught at the University of Virginia except nursing (although it is possible that nursing faculty researching in other disciplines would be considered). UVA’s one requirement is that nominees must already have secured time off during the year for research.

Under the agreement with Downing College, UVA pays its own faculty member, therefore requiring that nominees must be on payroll here. The Provost’s Office does not provide the salary funds; they must come either from sponsored research programs, from sesquicentennial associateships, or from the deans. Some dining privileges are provided by Downing and there is a pleasant apartment at Downing generally available in the spring. The Provost’s Office pays the rental cost up to five months residence; the faculty member pays for any additional time that exceeds five months. We hope this makes it possible for more of our faculty to consider this opportunity. Downing has found it necessary to limit the invitation to the spring semester only.

Interested individuals should submit a cover letter, a brief proposal, including a statement of their intended activities while at Downing, and updated curriculum vitae to Cliff Maxwell (cam4z@virginia.edu). Selection of the Fellow will occur in early February, 2019, by the Board of Downing College.

Over the past 30 years, UVA has sent faculty from Law, Medicine, Architecture, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences, and all have found it to be a unique and rewarding experience.
