Department of Defense – Pre-announcements June 29, 2018

The DoD has released pre-announcements for the following initiatives managed by the Department of Defense (DoD) office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP):

Accelerating Innovation in Military Medicine Research Award

  • Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent)
  • Supports highly creative and conceptually innovative high-risk research with the potential to accelerate critical discoveries or major advancements that will significantly impact military health and medicine
  • Supports novel research concepts and development of enabling technologies; not intended to support incremental advances on previous or ongoing work
  • Supports applied research efforts that initiate or enhance potential game-changers; clinical trials are not allowed.
  • Projects proposed should be relevant to at least one DoD medical research program area. Cross-cutting research projects with the potential to benefit multiple DoD medical research program areas are highly encouraged.
  • Applications using synthetic or systems biology-based approaches are highly encouraged
  • Preliminary data that are relevant to the proposed research are encouraged, but not required.
  • Pre-proposal is required; application submission is by invitation only.
  • Maximum funding of $350,000 for direct costs (plus indirect costs) over up to 18 months.

Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program Horizon Award

  • Principal Investigator (PI):
    • Pre-doctoral candidate within 2 years of completion of required coursework/laboratory rotations, successfully passed qualifying examinations, and is working in his/her Mentor’s laboratory application submission deadline
      OR
    • Postdoctoral fellow within 3 years of completion of terminal degree and is working in his/her Mentor’s laboratory at application submission deadline
  • Mentor: Investigators at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent); must have a proven publication and funding record in cancer research
  • PI and Mentor must be at the same organization.
  • Letter of Intent is required. An invitation to submit a full application is not required.
  • Supports junior-level scientists in conducting impactful research with the mentorship of an experienced cancer researcher (i.e., Mentor).
  • Must address at least one of the FY18 PRCRP Topic Areas and at least one of the FY18 PRCRP Military Relevance Focus Areas.
  • Preliminary data are not required.
  • Clinical trials are not allowed.
  • Maximum funding for the entire period of performance is $150,000 for direct costs (plus indirect costs) over up to 2 years.
