This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks to support basic and translational research investigating the role of aging in chronic heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders.  Specifically, this FOA solicits revisions (formerly called “competing supplements”) to currently funded NHLBI R01 grants that employ nonhuman mammals to study the pathogenesis or possible therapeutic treatments of chronic heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders.  Applications should extend the scientific scope of the funded parent projects to include experiments using age-appropriate animals to address how aging and aging-related processes influence chronic heart, lung, blood, and sleep-related disorders.  Revision applications can request funds for:  1) the purchase of aged animals or in-house aging of animals; and 2) the costs of additional experiments and personnel required.
