Please join us in congratulating the 2021 Class of Pinn Scholars, named for 3 years as of March 1, 2021. Pinn Scholars are mid-career faculty selected on the basis of their scientific expertise and research productivity, and contributions to the School of Medicine and to the greater research community, including mentoring and service. They are expected to develop a new project or direction in their research and share their results at an annual symposium.
The new 2021 Pinn Scholars and their projects are:

T cell “selection” in the brain - Hervé Agaisse, PhD, Associate Professor of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology
Model for the post-epithelial phase of Shigellosis and immune interactions - Peter Kasson, PhD, Associate Professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics
Protecting against future pandemic viruses that don’t yet infect humans
The 2020 Class of Pinn Scholars were introduced at the February 2020 School of Medicine Research Retreat and included:
- Mark DeBoer, MD, MSc, Professor of Pediatrics, Pediatric Endocrinology
- Hui Zong, PhD, Associate Professor of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology
- Andrew Dudley, PhD, Associate Professor of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology
- Michael Salerno, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine
The Pinn Scholars program is named in honor of Dr. Vivian Pinn who was a graduate of the UVA School of Medicine Class of 1967. She is a member of the National Academies of Science, a fellow in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and past president of the National Medical Association. She was also the inaugural Director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health.
