Howard KutchaiThe School of Medicine is saddened to share that Howard C. Kutchai, PhD, a respected and dedicated former professor in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics, passed away on February 12, 2026. Dr. Kutchai devoted his career to advancing the understanding of cardiovascular biology and fundamental physiological mechanisms.

Dr. Kutchai earned his undergraduate degree with high distinction and Phi Beta Kappa in Zoology from the University of Michigan and his PhD in physiology from the University of California, San Francisco in 1967. He went on to complete postdoctoral research in biomathematics at the University of Michigan and in comparative respiratory physiology at the University of Oslo. After a research position in membrane biochemistry at Johns Hopkins University, he joined the School of Medicine as an assistant professor in 1972 and was promoted to full professor in 1981.

Dr. Kutchai’s primary research focused on structure and regulation of key ion transport proteins, especially the calcium-ATPases and sodium-potassium ATPases that play central roles in cardiac muscle function and cellular homeostasis. His work, published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, contributed to a deeper understanding of how these membrane pumps influence cardiac contractility and rhythm, areas of high relevance to heart disease and muscle physiology.

In addition to his research, Dr. Kutchai was a gifted educator, serving as the director of the Graduate and Medical Student Physiology course for many years, when basic science departments taught medical students. He was awarded the David A. Harrison Distinguished Educator Award in recognition of his teaching excellence in 2010.

Dr. Kutchai served in many leadership roles throughout his career. He was active on the original School of Medicine Committee on Women that formed in 1989, a taskforce to reformulate criteria for the School’s promotion and tenure process, and student advocacy and salary equity committees. From 2004-2006, he served as interim department chair, and he continued to be a mentor to faculty throughout his time at UVA. Dr. Kutchai was awarded The Raven Award in 2009 in recognition of his exceptional service, scholarship, and dedication to the university.

Known as “Kutch” to his peers, Dr. Kutchai was a generous and kind person who cared deeply for his colleagues, friends, and family. His distinctive and joyful laugh could be heard frequently in Pinn Hall, where he spent much of his time, until his retirement in 2014. He was often seen accompanied by his beloved Airedale terrier Maggie, who was walked outside the health sciences buildings by volunteers while he was busy giving lectures.

Dr. Kutchai will always be fondly remembered at the School of Medicine and in the broader scientific community for the impact he made as a researcher, educator, mentor, and friend. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family and his many friends at UVA.
