Clinicians and medical leaders are integral \u201cagents of change\u201d\u00a0 in contemporary healthcare systems.\u00a0 We help to imagine, create, shape and shepherd ideas. \u00a0In academic settings, we are also encouraged to share our ideas and our work with others, through both formal presentations and publications, in order to be a part of a larger conversation. \u00a0This is a fabulous way to create scholarship and\u00a0academic currency.\u00a0 This currency can come from a myriad of places, including administrative activities.<\/p>\n

Here are some concrete ways to harness this energy and to create some academic currency towards your academic promotion:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Realize that you are not alone<\/strong>.\n
      \n
    • As you are doing the work,\u00a0look at who is in the room with you. \u00a0You are surrounded by potential collaborators and mentors.<\/li>\n
    • As you approach this in an interdisciplinary fashion, consider which discipline or constituency each person represents.<\/li>\n
    • There is a rich amount of information here \u2013 \u00a0the A3s, the observations, the standard work piloted, the outcomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Share it locally. \u00a0Then share it regionally.<\/strong>\n
        \n
      • Once you have completed a project, consider a poster or a presentation.<\/li>\n
      • Decide where you might want to present this work.<\/li>\n
      • Have someone in the library or someone you know help you send in an abstract and help you with the presentation\/poster.<\/li>\n
      • Mentor and write with trainees and colleagues, not only in your discipline, but in other ones.<\/li>\n
      • Submit your work to a meeting you normally go to,\u00a0one that you know about, or one that someone on your team attends.<\/li>\n
      • Use this platform as a springboard to other activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Broaden your reach.<\/strong>\n
          \n
        • Ask the librarians and your senior mentors to help you find out which journals and conferences would be appropriate for your activities.<\/li>\n
        • Think outside your discipline into other academic areas of publishing.<\/li>\n
        • Most specialty societies and publications have subcategories which include administration, quality and safety.\u00a0 Consider submitting your work to one of these venues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • If you feel stuck, ask for help.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
