The University of Virginia’s Department of Surgery has successfully completed its first radiofrequency ablation (RFA) procedure, marking a significant advancement in the treatment of benign thyroid nodules. Anna Fashandi, MD, a surgical oncologist specializing in the endocrine system, performed the procedure, which utilizes noninvasive thermal treatment to address solid tumors.
RFA has been established for some time in treating tumors of various organ systems, such as the liver, and its recent application to thyroid nodules provides an innovative option for patients. In this case, Dr. Fashandi used RFA to treat a symptomatic, benign thyroid nodule that had been causing discomfort for the patient.
“This was my first case, and I prepared extensively by joining the North American Society for Interventional Thyroidologists to deepen my understanding of the procedure. I also underwent hands-on training and observed other procedures to ensure I was comfortable with the process,” Dr. Fashandi stated.
RFA is suitable for patients with benign thyroid nodules that have been confirmed by two separate biopsies, particularly those experiencing symptoms such as choking, difficulty swallowing, discomfort, or cosmetic concerns. Notably, the procedure is not recommended for individuals with pacemakers or pregnant patients.
The procedure itself lasted about 45 minutes, during which the patient tolerated the treatment exceptionally well. Following 30 minutes of observation, she was able to return home and resume her normal activities.
Recovery from an RFA procedure is notably swift, with patients typically able to return to their daily routines the same day, although they are advised to avoid highly strenuous activities for the first few days post-treatment.
Looking ahead, there is potential for RFA to expand beyond benign thyroid pathology. Research is underway to explore its application in treating very small cancers and recurrent cancers in patients who prefer to avoid more invasive surgical options.
The successful completion of this procedure highlights UVA’s commitment to advancing patient care through innovative techniques and cutting-edge technology in the field of thyroid health.
