American College of Surgeons Recognizes UVA Health University Medical Center

November 18, 2025 by daf4a@virginia.edu

ACS CongratulationsThe American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) has recognized UVA Health University Medical Center for achieving meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care in 2024.

The ACS NSQIP recognition program commends a select group of hospitals for achieving a meritorious composite score in either an “all cases” category or a category which includes “high risk” cases. UVA Health was recognized in both categories, reflecting excellence across eight key outcome areas: mortality, cardiac (cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction), pneumonia, unplanned intubation, ventilator >48 hours, renal failure, surgical site infection, and urinary tract infection. This distinction places UVA Health among only 76 ACS NSQIP-participating hospitals nationwide receiving these outcomes.

Congratulations to everyone in the Department of Surgery on this recognition, and especially to Beth Turrentine, PhD, who leads the department’s NSQIP efforts. It is Dr. Turrentine’s leadership and the daily work of all of the surgeons and their teams that underscores UVA Health’s ability to achieve the highest standards of surgical quality.
