Pegasus Air helicopter, part of UVA Health’s renowned hospital-based air and ground transport service providing care to critically ill and inured patients, has received a magnificent upgrade! The new and improved Pegasus Air helicopter is an Airbus EC-145C2e that boasts a more spacious interior, complete with state-of-the-art additions like secure storage for pumps and extra vent circuits. Serving patients within about a 120-nautical-mile radius of Charlottesville, the upgraded helicopter will help limit out-of-hospital time for critically ill patients—like ones in need of a counter pulsation heart pump and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support—by providing an alternative to ground critical care ambulances.
The Pegasus Air helicopter has been transforming how UVA Health cares for patients since its inception in 1984. The name “Pegasus” was chosen in a contest at our medical center, inspired by the mythical stories of the courageous flying horse swooping in to aid heroes in their quests. The Pegasus Air team crew is enthusiastic about taking flight in the new helicopter to provide aid to our patients and optimistic about how it will improve patient outcomes at UVA Health.
