From the CEO’s Desk: Growing Our Clinical Network

UPG’s Clinical Operations team has been on a marathon sprint recently, doing extensive work to prepare for the launch of several new practices in our regional market. This summer has been unprecedented:  we’ve opened these practices more or less simultaneously in different geographic areas, and under compressed timelines–in one instance, in just six weeks. We have a new clinical presence in Richmond and have added new services in Culpeper to meet patient demand.  As we seize these opportunities for growth, the clinical revenue that we generate will help support the School of Medicine’s academic missions. Nineteen Nods in Newsweek

Newsweek cancer coverCongratulations to the 19 UVA physicians who appeared in the pages of Newsweek recently, named to the “Top Cancer Doctors 2015” list. This particular honor roll is compiled through peer nominations and extensive research by Castle Connolly (perhaps best known as publisher of America’s Top Doctors). A physician-led research team whittled down some 100,000 nominations. Of note, UVA has more physicians named to the list than any other medical center in the state. [Read more…]

Patient-Friendly Access: Five Things You Should Know

1. What’s our main objective?

In a nutshell, our goal is “to develop a welcoming, consistent, timely, efficient and effective patient and referring provider access experience for outpatient clinical care.”

That experience means different things to different stakeholders. For patients, it means timely appointments, great customer service, and being involved in the scheduling process. For a referring provider, it equates to ease of access and proactive communication from our front-line staff about their patients, including notification of appointments.  For our providers, it means having the right records in the right place, scheduling flexibility, and standardized, efficient processes. Workload and collections trends for FY 2015

Above is a snapshot of workload trends for the 21 clinical departments and UPG’s Clinical Practice Group for fiscal year 2015. The FY 2015 budget included 62 new hires and represented an annual increase of 5.6% over FY 2014.  The takeaway: FY 2015 results were 1.8% UNDER budget, 3.6% OVER the prior year, and on target with newly hired physicians. (Of note, 38 of the 62 budgeted hires were on board through June.) [Read more…]
