Alan Matsumoto, MD, professor in the University of Virginia’s Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging, has been elected as president of the American College of Radiology (ACR), effective May 6.
“Dr. Matsumoto is a trusted physician leader with a long record of service to the College and a clear commitment to quality, safety and patient-centered care,” said ACR CEO Dana Smetherman, MD, in a statement from the ACR.
“His experience across clinical practice, education and ACR governance will continue to be a valuable resource as we work to advance policies, products and services that help radiologists provide the highest quality patient care.”
Dr. Matsumoto has a history of leadership nationally and locally. He previously served as the ACR’s vice president, and more recently as the chair of the ACR’s Board of Chancellors. He also served as UVA Radiology’s department chair from 2009 to 2024, and has been a key figure in establishing UVA’s Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence in 2009.
In 2024, UVA Radiology created a $3 million endowment in recognition of Dr. Matsumoto and his wife, Julie A.
