This summer marked the largest turnout yet for Charlottesville’s annual Healthy Streets, Healthy People health fair—and it couldn’t have come at a more meaningful time. Against the backdrop of recent challenges in our community, the event stood as an encouraging reminder of what’s possible when neighbors and local organizations come together for a great purpose.
Held on July 12 at Booker T. Washington Park, this year’s fourth annual event featured dozens of booths and activities dedicated to uplifting the health, safety, and spirit of the community. Students from the UVA School of Medicine Student National Medical Organization partnered with WellAware, UVA Health, and countless other organizations to offer resources, support, and a welcoming presence throughout the day.
Healthy Streets, Healthy People continues to embrace its dual mission: to improve street safety and to encourage environmentally healthier neighborhoods. Visitors at the fair had the opportunity to participate in training sessions, access safety supplies, and speak directly with local advocates, representatives from community initiatives, and first responders.
There was also plenty of fun to be had—with raffle prizes throughout the day, dance breaks, and music providing the soundtrack to a day filled with laughter, learning, and connection. Children enjoyed yard games alongside student volunteers, eagerly competing with firefighters in sack races and playing tug-of-war with community leaders.
In a year when many have felt the weight of uncertainty, this event served as a beacon of unity and shared purpose. From educational booths to joyful moments in the park, Healthy Streets, Healthy People reminded us that community wellness begins with coming together.
