Jayakrishna Ambati, MD, founding director of UVA’s Center for Advanced Vision Science and DuPont Guerry III Professor of Ophthalmology, led research suggesting that HIV drugs could help prevent Alzheimer’s. The research was featured in 100s of media outlets worldwide, including U.S. News & World Report, the New York Post and The Express.

The study indicates that current HIV medications might also offer protection against dementia. According to Dr. Ambati, “It’s estimated that over 10 million people around the world develop Alzheimer’s disease annually. Our results suggest that taking these drugs could prevent approximately one million new cases of Alzheimer’s disease every year.”
