
UVA School of Medicine Dean Melina Kibbe, MD
The University of Chicago has honored UVA School of Medicine Dean Melina Kibbe, MD, with a 2025 Alumni Award for Professional Achievement. The award recognizes Dean Kibbe’s outstanding contributions in the field of vascular surgery and her research to develop novel drug-eluting therapies for patients with vascular disease. The alumni awards at the University of Chicago have been a proud tradition since 1941, highlighting individuals who have made significant impacts in their communities and around the world.
With respect to her research achievements, Dean Kibbe has been independently funded by the NIH, DOD, VA, AHA, and AMA, among others since 2003. She has served as Principal Investigator (PI), national PI, site PI or consultant for many clinical trials for patients with peripheral artery disease. She has written over 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts, review articles, and book chapters, and holds more than 10 patents or provisional patents. Throughout her career, Dean Kibbe has also been a strong advocate for sex-inclusive biomedical research, women in surgery, and for surgeon-scientists.
As a clinician, Dean Kibbe has significant experience with both open and endovascular surgery. She has treated a wide range of vascular conditions, including carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and abdominal aortic aneurysms. Additionally, she has received 24 awards for teaching excellence as faculty member and held many national appointments, currently serving as editor-in-chief of JAMA Surgery.
Dean Kibbe earned both her undergraduate degree in biological sciences and medical degree from the University of Chicago. She completed her residency and a research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a vascular surgery fellowship at Northwestern University. The Professional Achievement Award will be presented to Dean Kibbe at the University of Chicago during alumni weekend, May 1-4, 2025.
