Bobby Chhabra, MD, the Lillian T. Pratt Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, presented a seminar session at the national Healthcare Facilities Symposium and Expo on Sept. 24-26, in Austin, Texas. The event is one of the country’s largest symposiums dedicated to healthcare design and facilities. It brings together architects, designers, engineers, contractors and healthcare providers to collaborate, share research, hear fresh perspectives on the healthcare industry.

Orthopedic care is one the fastest growing healthcare sectors today. In his presentation, Dr. Chhabra discussed how the University of Virginia acknowledged the growing demand for a more streamlined orthopedic experience for both patients and staff through the creation of the UVA Orthopedic Center at Ivy Road (OCIR).

Partnering with ZGF Architects, UVA aimed to create a comprehensive orthopedic center that would allow diverse patient groups to access a full range of care all in one place. The OCIR has transformed orthopedic care delivery for UVA and the entire region, elevating the patient experience and achieving the highest patient and staff satisfaction levels in the entire UVA Health System. With flexible and inclusive environments, clinics have the power to motivate patient recovery, improve operational efficiency and serve diverse groups.

Dr. Chhabra’s co-presenters for this seminar included Luis Carrazana, LEED AP, Associate University Architect, University of Virginia, and Maryam Katouzian, AIA, Principal, ZGF Architects.
