The August episode of the Girl Power Gurus podcast features Dean Melina Kibbe, MD, discussing why she became a vascular surgeon, sex disparities in research, advice for young women considering the medical profession, and more.

In addition to being the dean of the UVA School of Medicine and chief health affairs officer for UVA Health, Dr. Kibbe is an active, practicing vascular surgeon who has maintained an independently funded research lab since 2003. In the podcast, Dean Kibbe encourages young women to “follow their passion” and persevere through challenges and failure to achieve their dreams.

“If there is something you want to do that you are passionate about, don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t do it,” stated Dean Kibbe when asked what advice she’d offer young women starting out a career in medicine.

As we celebrate Women in Medicine month in September, we are proud to highlight Dean Kibbe as an exemplary role model for others, especially women.

Listen to the podcast interview with Dean Kibbe at girlpowergurus.com to hear some of her thoughtful insights about being a leader in healthcare and how her work brings her so much joy. Dean Kibbe says, “Nothing is greater than being able to help another human being and help a patient. It is incredibly rewarding.”
