JEDI Capstone Project: Starr Hill Pathways Program Students Explore Medicine

Stefanie Redemann, PhD, an associate professor of molecular physiology and biological physics, and Kamilla Esfahani, MD, an associate professor of anesthesiology, successfully completed their Justice, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (JEDI) Capstone Project, which included connecting the UVA School of Medicine clinical and research departments with the Starr Hill Pathways program, an initiative of UVA’s Equity Center.

For two weeks, middle school students in Albemarle County and Charlottesville City schools explored career opportunities in various fields of medicine. Drs. Redemann and Esfahani collaborated with five clinical departments and six basic science labs to introduce the students to medicine, from genetically modifying cells to intubating patients. JEDI leaders and individuals from their departments went above and beyond to ensure the students had an engaging and exciting experience.
