JoAnn Pinkerton, MD, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of the UVA Midlife Center, led a clinical trial examining a potential new treatment for menopause symptoms. She discussed the potential treatment and options for menopause care with NBC Nightly News.

The new treatments include nonhormonal drugs that can be extremely effective for some women, reducing frequency and severity of hot flashes, improving sleep, and overall quality of life. However, these new drugs aren’t being covered by some insurance companies, which impacts providers and patients as they discuss treatment plans. Pinkerton said in reference to the insurance hurdles, “I think that most providers feel hampered in their ability to just decide what the best medication is for their patients.”
